In the Footsteps of a Legend

My surgery was for many years run by a doctor who was a local legend. He was respected by the local community and his patients were very sad when the day finally came for him to retire.

For a brief period an Australian doctor took over the practice. He soon became liked and respected for his easy-going style. He did not stay very long and was soon replaced by an Indian doctor.

The people of Normanton are generally friendly and welcome newcomers to the town. Unfortunately the Indian doctor did not have the right approach to settling into the area. His attitude was simply not right. He could have helped himself considerably by maintaining the standards set by those before him.

Patients noticed a fall in standards at the surgery. The waiting room was not being kept as clean as it once was. One patient was more than a little upset when he found the toilet was not very clean. His comments were typical of the style of speaking in the area. He said: "It's all reight foh them buggers, they stand up ont seat."

In these days of political correctness such comments may be considered racist. In reality the comments were just those of a plain-speaking Yorkshireman.
